1020 DOM tubing is a cold-drawn, seamless steel tube produced by
drawing a hot-finished tube over a mandrel, resulting in precise
dimensions, smooth surface finish, and enhanced mechanical
properties. Commonly manufactured from low-carbon grades such as
AISI 1020, it offers excellent machinability, weldability, and
uniform wall thickness, making it ideal for demanding mechanical
applications. Key competing grades include AISI 1008, 1018, 1020,
1030, and 1045, each with distinct chemical and mechanical
characteristics. DOM tubing typically conforms to standards such as
ASTM A519/A513 (USA), EN 10305-1 (EU), GOST 8734-75 (Russia), JIS
G3445 (Japan), and GB/T 4161 (China), and is widely used in
automotive shafts, hydraulic cylinders, furniture components, and
agricultural equipment.
“Drawn Over Mandrel” (DOM) tubing is manufactured by cold drawing a seamless tube over a tight-fitting mandrel, which refines inner and outer diameters, improves surface finish, and enhances mechanical properties through work hardening . The base material is low-carbon steel, commonly AISI 1020, known for its ductility, weldability, and consistent grain structure .

Dimensional Precision: Tight tolerances (< ± 0.13 mm on OD; ± 0.12 mm on WT) ensure interchangeability .
Enhanced Strength: Cold work increases yield and tensile strength versus hot-finished tubes .
Improved Surface: Smooth, machine-ready finish (Ra ≤ 1.6 µm) reduces post-machining labor .
Excellent Machinability & Weldability: Low-carbon steel matrix supports easy cutting and effective fusion welding .
Uniform Wall Thickness: Mandrel drawing achieves consistent wall thickness with minimal eccentricity .
ASTM A519: Standard for seamless mechanical tubing, including DOM by cold drawing
ASTM A513: Standard for electric-resistance welded mechanical tubing
EN 10305-1: Cold drawn seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes, precision grade
GOST 8734-75: Cold-formed seamless steel pipes, defining OD, WT, and mass tolerances
JIS G3445: Cold drawn steel tubes for general mechanical and structural use
