Codonopsis Pilosula

Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf., a perennial herbaceous vine of the genus Codonopsis in the Campanulaceae family. The root of Codonopsis pilosula is conical in shape, with a grayish-yellow surface and ring patterns. The top of the root has raised stem scars and buds, commonly known as "lion coiled head", and branches start from the middle. The rhizomes are smooth, numerous and all entwined together. The lower end of the leaf is heart-shaped and the edge is serrated. The flowers are pale yellowish green with dirty purple spots. The lower part of the fruit is hemispherical, while the upper part is short conical. The flowering period is from July to August, and the fruiting period is from August to September. The name "Codonopsis pilosula" first appeared in "Ben Cao Xin Cong" of the Qing Dynasty.

Codonopsis pilosula prefers a mild and cool climate and is cold-resistant. The seedlings prefer a moist and shady environment and are afraid of strong light. They are suitable for cultivation in sandy loam with deep soil layer, good drainage, loose soil and rich in humus. They are mainly distributed in some areas of North China, Northeast China and Northwest China. Seed propagation is adopted, with two methods: direct seeding of seeds and transplanting of seedlings. Sowing can be done in both spring and autumn. It is dug up around the middle to late October, between the Cold Dew and Frost's Descent, before the soil freezes.
