Astragalus membranaceus, a plant of the genus Astragalus in the
Fabaceae family, is also known as Northeast Astragalus, cotton
Astragalus, membranous astragalus, etc. It is a perennial herb,
reaching a height of 50 to 100 centimeters. The main root is thick
and grayish-white. The stem is upright, with many branches at the
upper part, having fine ridges and covered with white soft hairs.
The pinnate compound leaves have 13 to 27 leaflets, with petioles
0.5 to 1 centimeter long. The stipules are isolated, lanceolate or
linear-lanceolate, and are covered with white soft hairs or nearly
hairless underneath. The raceme is slightly denser, with 10 to 20
flowers. The pedicels are nearly the same length as the leaves or
relatively long, and significantly elongate by the fruiting stage.
The corolla is yellow or pale yellow, and the petals are oblong.
The capsule is membranous, slightly swollen, semi-elliptical, and
has a spiny tip at the top. The flowering period is from June to
August and the fruiting period is from July to September.
Astragalus membranaceus is mainly distributed in China, Russia,
Kazakhstan, Mongolia and other countries worldwide. It is widely
cultivated in various parts of China, mainly distributed in the
Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Gansu Province, Shandong
Province, Shaanxi Province and other places. It grows at the edge
of forests, in thickets or under sparse forests, and is also found
on slopes and beside gullies at an altitude of 2,500 to 4,000
meters. Astragalus membranaceus prefers a cool and sunny
environment. Cold-resistant but heat-sensitive, drought-resistant
but intolerant of waterlogging.
Astragalus membranaceus has medicinal value. According to the
"Chinese Pharmacopoeia" and the "Comprehensive Dictionary of
Traditional Chinese Medicine", Astragalus membranaceus has the
functions of tonifying qi and raising Yang, consolidating the
exterior and stopping sweating, promoting diuresis and reducing
swelling, generating body fluids and nourishing blood, promoting
the circulation of stagnation and relieving arthralgia, supporting
toxins and discharging pus, and healing sores and promoting muscle
growth. It is mainly used to treat all conditions of qi deficiency
and blood deficiency. Can be used for the treatment of qi
deficiency weakness, poor appetite and loose stools, middle qi
depression, long-term diarrhea and rectal prolapse, hematochezia
and metrorrhagia, surface deficiency spontaneous sweating, edema,
internal heat and polydipsia, blood deficiency sallow, hemiplegia,
arthralgia and numbness, hard to ulcerate, long-term ulceration
without stopping, lung deficiency cough, etc.
