The utilization of HDPE Geomembranes for reservoirs lining has been
applied in tens of thousands of projects throughout the world and
they retain proven cost-benefit advantages.
What is the service life of geomembrane?
The service life of geomembrane is affected by many factors such as
material type, use environment, construction quality and
maintenance measures, as follows:
Material type and life span
1. HDPE geomembrane
- Underground/underwater use: High-quality HDPE (new material +
anti-aging agent) can last up to 50-100 years, and some studies
show that the stability of polypropylene materials can exceed 100
years.
- Exposed use: HDPE membrane with anti-ultraviolet agent has a life
span of about 5-10 years, while ordinary recycled materials have a
life span of only 2-3 years.
2. LDPE/EVA geomembrane
- LDPE has poor low temperature resistance, and EVA is suitable for
cold areas, but its life span is generally shorter than HDPE, and
it can be used underground for about 30-50 years.
3. PVC/CPE geomembrane
- Short life span, usually 10-30 years, and susceptible to chemical
corrosion.
Key Influencing Factors
1. Use environment
- Light-proof environment (underground/underwater): UV rays,
temperature changes and oxidation are weak, and the service life is
significantly extended.
- Exposure environment: UV rays accelerate photo-oxidation aging,
shortening the service life to less than 5 years.
2. Material quality
- New materials: high tensile strength, strong corrosion resistance,
and service life far exceeds that of recycled materials.
- Additives: Antioxidants and UV absorbers can delay aging.
3. Construction and maintenance
- Welding process: The strength of hot-melt welding seams must reach
more than 80% of the parent material, and manual bonding is prone
to leakage.
- Protective layer: Covering with non-woven fabrics or clay over
200mm can prevent mechanical damage.

Measures to extend service life
1. Choose high-quality materials: give priority to new HDPE
materials with a thickness of ≥0.5mm.
2. Avoid exposure: If exposure is required, cover with grass
fences, felt or thicken to more than 2.0mm.
3. Standard construction: Strictly weld according to standards and
reserve expansion margin (1.5%-2%).
4. Regular maintenance: Check for damage and repair in time to
prevent chemical corrosion
