What causes a CLV-180 lamp socket to burn out or develop scorch
marks?
The most common cause is poor mechanical contact (loose screws). If
the hex screws securing the lamp assembly into the socket are not
tightened adequately, it creates electrical resistance. Because a
300W Xenon lamp draws high current, this resistance generates
extreme localized heat, leading to electrical arcing, pitting, and
eventual melting of the socket contacts.
How to know if need to replace just the Xenon bulb or the entire
socket unit?
Inspect the interface during a lamp change:
If the metal contact pins inside the socket housing are shiny,
clean, and securely hold the lamp, only need to change the bulb.
If the socket housing is cracked, the wires are brittle, or the
metal terminals are black, pitted, or deformed by heat, the socket
unit must be replaced to prevent damage to the new bulb or the
light source ballast.
