A Laminar Flow Cabinet with a HEPA filter is a type of cleanroom equipment designed to create a clean, controlled environment by using unidirectional airflow that helps prevent contamination of sensitive materials. It utilizes a HEPA filter (High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter) to remove airborne particles and microorganisms, ensuring that the air entering the workspace is as clean as possible.

How It Works:

1. HEPA Filter:

   • HEPA filters in laminar flow cabinets are highly effective at trapping particles as small as 0.3 microns, which includes dust, bacteria, and other contaminants.
   • These filters are rated to capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns in size, which is crucial for maintaining clean and sterile conditions in the workspace.

2. Laminar Flow:

   • Airflow in a laminar flow cabinet is unidirectional, meaning it flows in parallel layers with minimal turbulence. This ensures that contaminants are carried away from the work surface rather than circulating within the cabinet.
   • There are typically two types of laminar flow:
     • Vertical Laminar Flow: Air flows from the top to the bottom of the workspace, ensuring that contaminants are filtered out of the work area.
     • Horizontal Laminar Flow: Air flows horizontally from the back of the cabinet toward the front, providing a clean airflow across the work surface.

3. Clean Workspace:

   • The filtered air that passes through the HEPA filter creates a clean environment within the cabinet, protecting sensitive materials from airborne contamination.
   • This makes laminar flow cabinets ideal for tasks like biosafety work, pharmaceutical compounding, electronics assembly, and laboratory research.
