Well Drilling Safety Clamp Technical Description:
Safety clamp features a multi-link design, consisting of multiple
links that can be flexibly articulated together. Each link has a
separate tapered slide that acts as a grip member, much like a
tapered rotary slide, and each slide is in a retracted position on
a tapered spring tension that is interchangeable as a unit. When
clamped, each small slide takes a firm initial grip on the surface
of the pipe. If the pipe begins to fall, or should the load
increase, which occurs on safety clamp, the tapered installation
causes each clamp to wedge against the surface of the pipe to
increase grip or lock the pipe to prevent further movement.
Safety clamps maintain even pressure around the pipe, minimizing
the risk of crushing the pipe or damaging the surface. Complete
with tapered slides that are interchangeable as a unit, the safety
clamp is ready to adapt to almost any diameter. Each link changes
the effective clamping diameter of the jig by one inch.
Safety clamps can be divided into MP type, WA-T type and WA-C type.
They can accommodate pipes from 1-1/8′ to 15-5/8′. They are
drilling and maintenance equipment designed and manufactured to API
Specification 7K specifications. They are essential tools for
handling drill collars, flush joints and shoulder tubes. Safety
clamp can be adjusted to the size of the pipe by changing the
number of chains and can accommodate pipes from 1.1/8 to 4.1/2
inches.
The "C" type safety clamp is one of the most valuable and
indispensable tools in oilfield drilling operations on the drill
floor. It can prevent the drill pipe and casing from being repaired
when the drill pipe and casing or the wire rope are broken. The

Each chain link has a separate wedge-shaped clamping jaw as a
clamping component, similar to a tapered drill pipe clamp. Each
clamping jaw is fixed in a fixed position on the cone surface by a
spring. When the clamps are clamped, each jaw will bite tightly on
the outer surface of the pipe. When the pipe slides down or the
load increases, the tapered structure causes the teeth on the jaws
to bite the pipe tighter, thereby increasing the biting force and
locking the pipe to prevent it from sliding further. Furthermore,
each link of the tapered jaws is interchangeable as an entire
assembly, so it can be used on any diameter pipe. Adding or
removing chain links can change the effective clamping diameter of
the safety clamp. Parts are made from alloy steel and heat treated
to increase strength and improve clamping capabilities.
MP type safety clamps are suitable for preventing drilling tools
from sliding down when making up or unclipping during oil and gas
drilling operations. They are also a necessary tool for handling
drill collars, flush joint pipes and small shoulder pipes. They can
be adapted to fit different sized pipes by changing the number of links.
