Carbonless paper, also known as NCR paper, is specially coated with two reactive chemical layers: CB (coated back) and CF (coated front). These coatings contain microscopic dye capsules that serve a critical function in the image transfer process.

When pressure is applied—such as from handwriting with a pen or the impact of a dot matrix printer—the capsules in the CB layer rupture, releasing the dye. This dye then reacts with the CF coating on the next sheet, causing a color change and creating a visible image or text on the top surface of that sheet.

The image only appears on the front side of the CF-coated paper, and nothing is visible on the reverse side—this is a clear way to distinguish between the coated surfaces. As this type of paper creates copies without the use of traditional carbon sheets, it is aptly called carbonless paper.
