I. Description of the Dutch Smartec Low-Power High-Accuracy Digital Output Temperature Sensor SMT172:

SMT172 is a new low-power, high-precision digital output temperature sensor. It features excellent performance, ease of use, and a wide temperature measurement range. It is a single-crystal silicon integrated circuit that employs a new design principle and uses high-precision single-point calibration. Its accuracy reaches ±0.25°C within the range of -10°C to 100°C.

The operating voltage range of SMT172 is 2.7 volts to 5.5 volts. When operating at 3.3 volts, the continuous working current is 60 microamperes. The measurement speed can reach up to 4,000 valid readings per second (at room temperature). The extremely low measurement noise makes this sensor an energy-efficient temperature sensor (each measurement consumes only 0.36 microjoules of energy).

The output of SMT172 is a pulse width modulation signal, and the duty cycle is proportional to the measured temperature. This enables this temperature sensor to interface directly with microprocessors without the need for additional analog-to-digital conversion circuits. Currently, even though microprocessors typically have high-frequency timers that can quickly and accurately read the time interval of pulse signals to obtain duty cycle information, users can quickly complete the steps from development to market entry.
