Introduction of Vacuum Coating Drum :

The coating drum is the central drum of the system. It is driven by a motor; its speed (which controls the film's speed) is regulated.

The coating drum transports the film from the winding chamber into the coating chamber, to the evaporator station (evaporation boats), and back from the coating chamber to the winding chamber. This drum also serves as the vacuum isolation between the two chambers.

During coating, the film is exposed to considerable thermal stress; this is why the coating drum is cooled. For good thermal contact between the film and drum, the film must lie on the coating drum. This is accomplished by applying tension to the film (the unwinder “slows down”, the rewinder and tension roll “pull”).
