Brief Introduction of Geocell Confinement System
There are two common problems at the junction of old and new roads:
one is that the design is not comprehensive, and there are many
technical difficulties in construction; the other is that the
strength of the old road is insufficient and the thickness of the
reinforcement layer is thin. The use of geogrid can make up for the
deficiencies in design and construction, and improve the tightness
of the new and old joints. Taking a highway project as an example,
the original width of the pavement is 9 m, and now it is expanded
to 15 m. The pavement structure layers from top to bottom are:
AC-13 asphalt concrete layer, AC-20 asphalt concrete layer, cement
stabilized gravel layer, graded gravel layer. Using glass fiber
geogrid material, the breaking strength is ≥50 kN/m, the breaking
elongation is ≥3%, the grid size is 25.4mm×25.4mm, and the width is
5m. After the construction is completed, the line can pass
smoothly, and the appearance and quality are better than the old
pavement structure; compared with the replacement and graded gravel
method, the use of geogrid not only reduces the cost, but also
saves maintenance costs, showing good social and economic benefits.
Geogrid System Characteristic
Geogrid has large tensile strength and tensile modulus, which can
realize the uniform distribution of load and stress in a large
area. In the soft foundation or soil layer, the application of
geogrid can reduce and disperse the concentrated stress of the
upper load on the soft foundation; In the asphalt structure layer,
the creep effect of asphalt can be weakened and the cracking of
asphalt layer can be avoided. The mesh shape of geogrid is the
same, and the shear resistance of upper particles and lower
particles will not be affected. The deformation and displacement
caused by load compaction can be avoided under the action of
stiffness, tensile strength and mesh interlocking,
Improve particle compaction effect.
When laying geogrids, the direction of force is required to be
perpendicular to the axis direction of the roadbed to ensure
smoothness, tension, no bulge, and overlap according to the design
width. First, use U-shaped rivets to fix, the main force direction
of the grille, try to ensure that the whole length has no joints,
and control the overlap width to be more than 20 cm; The overlap
width should be controlled at more than 10 cm; if two or more
layers of grids are used, the upper and lower layers should be
staggered. After the large area is laid, adjust the straightness;
try to shorten the time when the grille is exposed
After filling a layer of soil, before rolling, the grid should be
tensioned again to ensure that the grid is in a state of tension
and stress.

In soft soil high fill engineering, laying geogrid in the middle of
30-50 cm gravel layer can form geogrid gravel cushion and give full
play to the reinforcement role of excavated geogrid. On the one
hand, the geogrid has strong shear resistance, which can
effectively prevent the gravel from falling into the soft
foundation, and promote the grid and gravel to be embedded closely
to form a stable whole. On the other hand, the geogrid will form a
horizontal plane in terms of drainage, which can be used as a
drainage channel. After the subgrade is formed, it can effectively
reduce the soil moisture content. Third, the geogrid is laid above
the soft foundation, which will produce isolation effect,
It is not only convenient for construction, but also can restrain
the lateral deformation of foundation and reduce uneven settlement.
Fourth, increase the shear resistance of soil and change the
physical and mechanical properties of soft foundation.
