Brief Introduction of Geocell Confinement System
Geogrid is a new type of synthetic material with many technical
advantages. This paper introduces the application of geogrid in
soft soil foundation, filling road section, pavement construction,
and backfill soil, points out the key points of construction
technology, and analyzes it in combination with engineering cases.
It is hoped to provide experience and reference for similar
projects, improve the construction quality of highway projects, and
obtain economic and social benefits.
Geogrid System Characteristic
When the external force acts on the grid unevenly, the mesh will
deform due to the transverse tensile stress, which shows the
restraint effect and has strong adaptability to the non-uniform
distributed load. The geogrid has high friction resistance. When
used as reinforcement, it can enhance the shear strength of the
structural layer and improve the overall stability.
Grid laying: On a flat and compacted site, the main force direction
(longitudinal) of the installed grid should be perpendicular to the
direction of the embankment axis. The laying should be flat,
without wrinkles, and as tight as possible. It should be fixed by
inserting nails and earth-rock weight. The main stress direction of
the laid grating is preferably the whole length without joints. The
connection between the panels can be manually tied and overlapped,
and the width of the overlap is not less than 10cm. If there are
more than two layers of grilles, the layers should be staggered.
After a large area is laid, the straightness should be adjusted as
a whole. After filling a layer of soil, before rolling, the grille
should be tightened manually or with equipment again, and the force
should be uniform, so that the grille is in a state of tension and
stress in the soil.

Application in road construction
In the process of pavement construction, geogrids are laid between
the base layer and the asphalt layer to promote the organic
combination of asphalt gravel and grids, which can give full play
to its embedded advantages, enhance the anti-fatigue ability of the
surface layer, and reduce the chance of reflection cracks. In
addition, the grid has good extensibility, which can restrain the
damage to the pavement caused by the load change, thereby
prolonging the service life of the pavement.
