Brief Introduction of Geocell Confinement System
There are two common problems at the junction of old and new roads:
one is that the design is not comprehensive, and there are many
technical difficulties in construction; the other is that the
strength of the old road is insufficient and the thickness of the
reinforcement layer is thin. The use of geogrid can make up for the
deficiencies in design and construction, and improve the tightness
of the new and old joints. Taking a highway project as an example,
the original width of the pavement is 9 m, and now it is expanded
to 15 m. The pavement structure layers from top to bottom are:
AC-13 asphalt concrete layer, AC-20 asphalt concrete layer, cement
stabilized gravel layer, graded gravel layer. Using glass fiber
geogrid material, the breaking strength is ≥50 kN/m, the breaking
elongation is ≥3%, the grid size is 25.4mm×25.4mm, and the width is
5m. After the construction is completed, the line can pass
smoothly, and the appearance and quality are better than the old
pavement structure; compared with the replacement and graded gravel
method, the use of geogrid not only reduces the cost, but also
saves maintenance costs, showing good social and economic benefits.
Geogrid System Characteristic
1. For roadbed reinforcement, the granular filler and the grid are
interlocked to form a stable plane to prevent the filler from
sinking and the vertical load is dispersed. Multi-layer
reinforcement is used in areas with poor geographical conditions;
3. It is used for pavement reinforcement, so that the mesh and
pavement materials are blended to effectively disperse and transmit
loads to prevent pavement cracks; 4. Bear constant impact load; 5.
Bear large alternating load; 6. Shorten Engineering construction
period; 7. Construction can also be carried out under harsh
environmental conditions; 8. Prevent pavement subsidence and cracks
caused by grouting; 9. Reduce the amount of pavement materials; 10.
Speed up construction
2. The construction method of the second layer of geogrid is the
same as that of the first layer. Finally, 0.3m of medium (coarse)
sand is filled. The filling method is the same as that of the first

3. After the third layer (coarse) sand is rolled, lay two geogrids
on both sides of the slope along the longitudinal direction of the
line, overlap 0.16m, and connect them in the same way, and then

each layer, and each side must ensure that the geogrids are buried
within 0.10m of the slope after the slope is repaired.

In soft soil high fill engineering, laying geogrid in the middle of
30-50 cm gravel layer can form geogrid gravel cushion and give full
play to the reinforcement role of excavated geogrid. On the one
hand, the geogrid has strong shear resistance, which can
effectively prevent the gravel from falling into the soft
foundation, and promote the grid and gravel to be embedded closely
to form a stable whole. On the other hand, the geogrid will form a
horizontal plane in terms of drainage, which can be used as a
drainage channel. After the subgrade is formed, it can effectively
reduce the soil moisture content. Third, the geogrid is laid above
the soft foundation, which will produce isolation effect,
It is not only convenient for construction, but also can restrain
the lateral deformation of foundation and reduce uneven settlement.
Fourth, increase the shear resistance of soil and change the
physical and mechanical properties of soft foundation.
