Our customer is a formulator, manufacturer and filler of aerosol and liquid products, based in Swadlincote, Derbyshire. The company specialises in chemical products for the personal care, automotive, industrial and household markets.

In June 2018, the business added a new production line and required extra workshop space in their existing building.

Challenges
For this particular project, responsible for the ground investigations, structural engineering, building control and planning.

The scope of works for this project included all the groundworks including;
the footings
concrete floor
drainage
outside concrete
modifications to existing brickwork
The design idea was to attach a mono pitch, lean-to extension to the steel columns of the existing steel-framed building with insulated cladding in the roof and walls as well as fast-action doors.

However, initial groundwork investigations highlighted the need for an enhanced foundation design in one corner of the build, caused by poor load-bearing capacity on the sub-soils. This created a significant amount of additional work to ensure that the external apron of the building, such as the concrete yard area, draining and retaining brick wall, were all compatible with the planned use for the new building. Vehicle, forklift and personnel movement on the land all had to be taken into consideration.

Solutions
Project manager comments, “As the steel works progressed, various options were costed and evaluated to integrate the external yard areas and their relationship to the building extension before deciding on the final scheme, which enabled the business to continue to run efficiently while the works were carried out.”

A bank holiday weekend plus another weekend were utilised to carry out all the work that could have been potentially disruptive the business had it been carried out during normal working days. This included the back-of-house works around the reception area and the demolition and re-instatement works to open up the extension and link this in with the existing and operational factory floor.
