What is Flaxseed Extract Flax Lignans?
Lignans are naturally occurring macromolecules with low molecular
weights. Flaxseed lignans are colorless crystals. After hydrolysis,
they are lipophilic and poorly soluble in water. Lignans are
diphenolic compounds found in higher plants, formed by the coupling
of two coniferyl alcohol residues present in plant cell walls. Most
exist as dimers, with a few trimers and tetramers also occurring.
They possess diverse structures and a wide range of biological
activities.
Secoisolariciresinol (SECO) is the predominant lignan found in
flaxseed; others include matairesinol (MAT), isollariciresinol
(ILC), lariciresinol (LCS), and pinoresinol (PRS).
Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a precursor of SECO, is
also considered a component of lignans. It is a phytoestroge very
similar to human estroge
Flax lignans are mainly found in flax seeds. Their content depends

generally accounts for about 0.9% to 1.5% of the seed weight, which
is 100 to 800 times higher than the other 66 foods known to contain
lignans.
