Product Description

LNG storage tanks are special containers used to store liquefied natural gas (LNG). Liquefied natural gas exists in liquid form at low temperatures, typically below -162°C.

The design of LNG storage tanks must have excellent thermal insulation performance to reduce evaporation loss and maintain the low-temperature state. The storage tanks generally consist of inner and outer double layers, with insulating materials filled in between to prevent heat transfer.

The inner tank is usually made of low-temperature-resistant stainless steel, while the outer tank is made of carbon steel, with a space left between them for support and protection. They can be divided into vertical and horizontal types according to their shapes, with capacities ranging from several hundred cubic meters to several hundred thousand cubic meters.

They are widely used in natural gas storage, transportation, and regasification supply links. Such storage tanks have extremely high safety requirements and need to be equipped with complete monitoring and pressure relief systems.

Technical Features

Ultra-low temperature material and structural design

The inner tank is made of 9% nickel steel (ASTM A553) or 6.5NiMo steel, which can maintain toughness at -196°C and resist low-temperature brittle fracture.

The outer tank is mostly made of prestressed concrete or carbon steel, with both load-bearing and heat-insulating functions. Some large-scale storage tanks adopt a "full containment" design (inner tank + secondary shielding layer + outer tank) to achieve zero leakage risk.

Efficient thermal insulation and heat intrusion prevention technology

A multi-layer insulation system is adopted: perlite filling (low cost), vacuum insulation panels (VIP, thermal conductivity < 0.01 W/m·K), or composite insulation (glass fiber + aluminum foil reflective layer) to reduce BOG generation caused by external heat ingress.

BOG (Boil-Off Gas) management system

BOG is processed through compressor re-liquefaction, combustion (flare), or direct utilization (power generation) to avoid overpressure in the storage tank. Large-scale storage tanks are equipped with "BOG re-liquefaction devices" with a recovery rate of over 95% (e.g., CNOOC Shenzhen LNG Receiving Terminal).

Prevention of "rollover" and stratification control

LNG is prone to stratification due to density differences. Sudden mixing after stratification can cause violent evaporation ("rollover"), leading to overpressure. Stratification is actively prevented through bottom heating, circulation pump stirring, or density monitoring systems (LTD sensors).

Intelligent monitoring and automated control

Integrated with PLC systems and AI algorithms, it realizes real-time monitoring of liquid level, temperature, pressure, and leakage status. It supports remote control (such as automatic gas replenishment and pressure regulation). Some storage tanks are equipped with digital twin systems to simulate responses under extreme working conditions.
