The core carrier component of a three-way catalytic converter is constructed from a porous ceramic material, which is precisely installed within a specially engineered exhaust pipe assembly. This component is referred to as the carrier due to its non-participation in the catalytic reactions; rather, its surface is coated with precious metal catalysts, such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium.

These catalysts enable the conversion of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) present in the automotive exhaust gas into water vapor and carbon dioxide. Simultaneously, they facilitate the decomposition of nitrogen oxides (NOx) into elemental nitrogen and oxygen. Hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are highly toxic gases; prolonged or excessive inhalation can result in fatal consequences. Nitrogen oxides, on the other hand, are significant contributors to the formation of photochemical smog.

Comprehensive research studies have conclusively demonstrated that three-way catalytic converters represent the most efficacious solution for mitigating these pollutant emissions. Through a series of carefully orchestrated oxidation-reduction reactions, carbon monoxide undergoes oxidation to form carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons are oxidized to produce water and carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides are reduced to harmless nitrogen and oxygen, thereby significantly reducing the environmental impact of automotive emission.
